I Want To Know Your Neighbor

From the 2009 Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Every year City Council passes bills co-naming stretches of New York City’s streets in honor of the city’s residents and organizations. Though the city now has a database cataloguing its co-named streets, there are a large number of streets with little to no information. Often, when a short biography is available, the heart wonders: did social worker and community activist Etheline Dubin (Lincoln Place between Washington and Classon Avenues) like to sleep late? What did Zenita Thompson (McKeever Place between Montgomery and Sullivan Places) order on her pizza?

We pass their parks and playgrounds in cabs, we cross their intersections, and some of us rent apartments “with” their addresses. The honored residents of New York City deserved to remember for who they were, in addition to what they did.

If you knew someone who was honored with a street, park, plaza, or monument, I want to know! Tell me about your neighbor.
